San Francisco Foundation and High Quality Preschools
CCP has received a grant from the San Francisco Foundation to support quality Pre-K site programs that are utilizing proven practices in early care and education, whole-child development, and culturally competent approaches to school readiness. We are excited to be recognized by San Francisco Foundation as a quality program. Our preschool programs have lower than required ratios at 1 adult to 8 children, highly qualified teachers, many of whom hold a Site Supervisor permit, and curriculum that focuses on nurturing creativity, warmth and curiosity in children. The grant will benefit both of our preschools; we have one in Montara and another in Half Moon Bay.
Interactive Animal Experiences at CCP
Tree Frog Treks has been wildly popular with the CCP school-age children – we’ve brought them to all of our school-age centers at least once! The children are able to interact with wild life right in their classrooms – hands on experiences that you would never get at a traditional “assembly” or even at the zoo. CCP has also worked with local farms to bring animals up close and personal with children.
Tree Frog Treks is about making science fun, connecting with nature and exercising one's imagination. It is about holding live rescued reptiles and amphibians like Savannah the Savannah Monitor Lizard and Ivan the Tortoise, examining amazing specimens like a musk ox head or giant emu legs, doing hands-on science and art projects, and getting out and getting dirty while exploring nature. By taking students out of the conventional classroom and bringing them into contact with the nature in their own back yard, Tree Frog Treks endeavors to help students develop better retention skills and a new-found enthusiasm for learning.
Raising Financially Responsible Children
On November 9, 2010 we had a wonderful workshop, conducted by Raymond Luk and Jenny Yu from New York Life, on how to raise financially responsible children. The workshop was based on the #1 New York Times Best-Seller “Money Doesn’t Grow On Trees: A Parents Guide to Raising Financially Responsible Children.” The author, Neale Godfrey is a syndicated columnist, television personality, and New York Times Best Selling author. Many of our CCP children and parents were invited to CCP El Granada to learn tips on how to save money from an allowance and parents learned how to teach their children about the value and responsible use of money.
Thank you to Raymond Luk and Jenny Yu for sponsoring and conducting this workshop – we hope to see you again on the Coastside!
Cigna Foundation Supports CCP Healthy Habits
Coastside Children’s Programs (CCP) was just awarded a $6,400 grant front the Cigna Foundation for our Healthy Habits Program. With the loss of our Healthy Habit Coordinator due to loss of Americorps funding for the program, the staff and children were disappointed. Luckily, our past Healthy Habits Coordinators have supported us in putting together a long term sustainability plan for this program including training for teachers and materials needed to implement the program. This means parents and children will still be able to benefit from the cooking lessons and nutrition workshops because of this grant!
Our goal with the Healthy Habits Program is to prevent diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and vitamin deficiency syndromes. Childhood overweight is also associated with social and psychological problems, such as discrimination and poor self-esteem. Children and adolescents who are overweight are more likely to become overweight or obese adults, which according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is associated with increased risks of premature death, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, osteoarthritis, and many other health problems.
Healthy eating contributes to overall healthy growth and development, including healthy bones, skin, and energy levels and a lowered risk of dental caries, eating disorders, constipation, malnutrition, and iron deficiency anemia. Research from the article “Food Insufficiency and American School-Aged Children’s Cognitive, Academic and Psychosocial Developments,” in Pediatrics, suggests that hunger and food insufficiency in children are associated with poor behavioral and academic functioning. CCP’s Healthy Habits Program hopes to prevent and address some of these concerns.
New Sandbox at CCP Half Moon Bay!
Thank you so much to Eric Dean’s Family for the donation of a new sandbox to the CCP Half Moon Bay Preschool center!! We are so excited to leave behind the old, black feeder for a wonderful sandbox that the children can dig, play, and learn in. Also, big thanks to the parents that helped put it all together: Brian Dean, Andy Grant, Shawn Dardenelle, Phil Griffiths. We are so happy to work with such a great community of families!

On May 19, 2010, with funding from the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, Coastside Children’s Programs held a fascinating and informative family workshop – Wild Things! Norm Gershenz from savenature.org taught CCP families how to engage children in nature and science. He dazzled parents and kids with his fascinating stories from around the world to study these incredible creatures.
Luckily for CCP, Norm was able to bring some of these creatures with him for this hands-on workshop to teach families what they can do to get kids interested in nature and how to even find bugs on the Coastside. Bug-phobic parents got a chance to familiarize themselves with the friendly critters and adventurous parents were able to show their kids how brave they were!
Thanks to Bothin Foundation
May 24, 2010 –
We would like to thank the Bothin Foundation for their generous grant of $26,100 for renovations of our CCP Montara site. When the CCP Montara buildings were originally placed on the Farallone View Elementary School campus, their position at the bottom of a hill ensured poor drainage and has resulted in significant wear and tear on the buildings.
The CCP-owned facilities in Montara were under repairs when it was discovered that prior water leakage had created issues that needed our immediate attention. We will be starting renovations in June/July 2010. Thank you, Bothin Foundation!!
